BEING OLAF METZEL

A film by Florian Waldvogel and Bernd Schöppner

The German sculptor, Olaf Metzel, is one of the most significant artists of our time. His sculpture „13.4.1981“ immediately made his name at the end of the 1980s when he exhibited at the documenta. Since then, his work has been shown all over the world. Filmmaker Bernd Schöppner and Florian Waldvogel spent three years in the company of this „agent provocateur“, documenting his life and work. From ever-shifting perspectives, the artist allows us a privileged insight into the creative process. We witness how Metzel thinks, how he views and evaluates his work, how he communicates with it, how he considers, bides his time, casts aside, reworks, sometimes also destroys and starts again. We are shown the genesis of a work of art, from the idea, the first sketches and the construction to the exhibition. I addition, Metzel, born 1952, talks about his childhood in early years of Berlin. Many of those who know him add their comments and opinions.
