KARL HAENDEL
Commission by Art in Public Places program of Miami-Dade County
The Jackson Memorial Hospital’s new Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Centre building.

8 new drawings by artist Karl Haendel, commissioned by the Art in Public Places program of Miami-Dade County will be installed today, throughout the Jackson Memorial Hospital’s new Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Centre building.

This facility is dedicated to helping patients relearn how to move and use their bodies after traumatic injuries and the loss of limbs.

Karl writes, “The staff at the rehab centre asked me to make work that focuses on the wide range of activity and movement possible even after physical trauma. I chose to depict the accomplished athletes and dancers who have used the loss of their limbs (not as a limitation) but as a stepping stone for greater physical achievement. I hope they bring some positive energy to the rehab centre - And also, maybe lead us to re-examine outmoded ideas of athletic prowess, corporal perfection and ableist thinking.”
