MARIECHEN DANZ
Rohkunstbau 28: Die Sorge um sich und die anderen
Schloss Altdöbern, DE
18.06.2023 – 29.10.2023

The performance artist Mariechen Danz was born in Dublin in 1980. She lives and works in Berlin, where she graduated as a master student at the University of the Arts in 2005. Her work focuses on the human body and the possibilities and limits of articulation. What can linguistic capacity and the legibility of signs achieve? In her performances, Danz tries to show where communication via language, body, gestures and facial expressions ends, what remains as not communicable. And again and again she poses the question of the role of one's own body with her sculptures, drawings, costume designs and installations. The human voice is therefore an inescapable means of expression for the front woman of the Berlin electronic noise pop band UNMAP. Her work "Womb tomb: Worry scrolls" is located at Rohkunstbau 28 in a central position in the atrium of the castle. Mariechen Danz has placed a life-size ceramic figure on a wooden crate. Its skin looks as if it has been burned, its body and the crate are covered with small holes, as if riddled with bullets. Individual organs hang in the air on long wires. This is also a communicative work. Visitors are asked to write their fears on small pieces of paper and drop them into the holes in the wooden crate. Perhaps a tentative offer to overcome war traumas.
