Britta Thie’s painting operates at the intersection of analog and digital visual culture. The starting point for her work is often the visual aesthetics of the internet, advertising, and pop culture, which she translates into painterly compositions. Her paintings reflect on themes of identity, self-presentation, and mediality in a present-day world shaped by technology. For her 'bathtub' series, the artist paints scenes from one of her favorite tv series, Star Trek, which she likes to watch in the bathtub as a way of winding down.
Her paintings appear like stills from an imaginary film, in which light, color, and perspective create narrative tension. Thie combines figurative motifs with flat, digitally rendered color spaces, thereby creating a tension between surface and depth, proximity and distance. Her work seems to echo the online and film worlds - sensual, artificial, and at the same time critical of the mechanisms of self - and image-production.
