Gregor Hildebrandt b. 1974
Gregor Hildebrandt was born in 1974 in Bad Homburg and currently lives and works in Berlin.
He is a Professor of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The so-called cassette boxes are among the best-known groups of works in Gregor Hildebrandt's oeuvre. For these, he uses music cassette boxes as a central design element. He collects these cases in large quantities and assembles them like modular building blocks to create wall pieces or sculptural installations. The multitude of identical elements creates a rhythmic, almost architectural structure that is also reminiscent of pixel images. The cassette cases function not only as material, but also as carriers of meaning: they refer to analog music and pop culture, to memory and stored sound. The installations thus become visually reduced but contextually multi-layered works that combine nostalgia, seriality, and the aesthetics of past media culture. The two new works we are showing at Art Basel Miami are a tribute to Barbara Streisand and Meryl Streep, who have inspired the artist in many ways.
