Gregor Hildebrandt b. 1974
The work Oma Giselas Fenster von außen [Oma Gisela’s window from outside] (2020) pays homage to the Hungarian-German artist and architect György Lehoczky (1901– 1979) who, despite his spectacular local commissions, is today largely forgotten. In Saarland, Hildebrandt’s home region, Lehoczky designed and outfitted[SH1] numerous buildings, such as train stations, churches, schools, and residential buildings, including the house where Hildebrandt’s grandmother, Oma Gisela, lived. He also made a name for himself as a glass designer through unique, figurative designs. In this work, Hildebrandt reinvents one of Lehoczky’s designs for his grandmother’s house, replacing different glass sections of the original designs with pieces of cut-out vinyl records. The black records used for the motifs Oma Giselas Fenster von außen contain various unlisted songs, while the colored records carry the album Flamingo by the band Anne, which was released on Grzegorzki Records in 2019.
At Kunsthalle Rostock, Oma Giselas Fenster von außen is hanging back to back with the work Oma Giselas Fenster [Oma Gisela’s window] (2020), which corresponds to Lehoczky’s window seen from inside of Oma Gisela’s house. The works’ symmetry enhanced by this specific display reproduce the original configuration of the window there.[SH1]„Outfitted“ sounds funny somehow.
