Anastasia Samoylova | Image Cities: Centro Niemeyer, Avilés
Photographer Anastasia Samoylova’s Image Cities project is on display in the Niemeyer Centre Plaza, curated by Victorial del Val. Image Cities is a visual study of the increasingly close integration between the photographic image and the urban environment.
At the Niemeyer Centre Plaza, visitors can enjoy some thirty photographs from Anastasia Samoylova’s Image Cities project, the winning entry of the first edition of the KBr Photo Award, launched by Fundación MAPFRE in 2021, which will transport us to Moscow (where the artist grew up), New York, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Brussels, Tokyo, Madrid and Barcelona, amongst others.
The artist travels through these cities, photographing images of fashion and beauty brands, bank and estate agent advertisements, and so on, which proliferate on building façades, billboards, buses and various other urban advertising media. These often monumental advertisements, found in any major city, cause these cities to gradually lose their individuality, merging into a single, unified entity.
