The triennial exhibition Emscherkunst presents contemporary art along the Emscher River in Ruhr, Germany. Twenty-five new works of art are on display along a 50-kilometer exhibition route, with a focus on the renaturation of the river system through the Emscher River Restoration Project and the transformation of the industrial landscape. Aladag created Wellenbrecher for Emscherkunst 2016. Using 60 'wave-breakers', typically used to protect riverbanks, the artist traces the outline of Noah’s Ark on the grounds of the flood retention basin, an outline reportedly discovered in 1960 by an Armenian pilot on Mount Ararat in Turkey.
